“It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)”

Working with clients across the country often reminds me of the famous song “It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)” – a song originally written by jazz musicians

Melvin “Sy” Oliver and James “Trummy” Young and first recorded in 1939 by both Jimmie Lunceford and Ella Fitzgerald.

The song was subsequently recorded by the Fun Boy Three with Bananarama in 1988.

If we accept that this saying has some credibility and in fact, makes sense why is it that translating this belief into our day to day working practises becomes so difficult?

I often hear the saying “Consultants come into our business and ask to see our watches and then just told us the time – what a waste of time that was, we already knew what the problems in our business were!”

This may be correct and of course not all ‘Consultants’ are the same, but I feel this completely misses the point of the value of professional and experienced advice to a business.

I break this issue down into three levels:

1. Understanding what the problem / issue is – Most organisations have a reasonable understanding of what they perceive the problems they are encountering to be (even though often other problems hide beneath the waves) – what I call the ‘iceberg theory’

2. Understanding what needs to be done to overcome the problem / issue – Most organisations have some understanding of what needs to be done to resolve the problem or issue

3. Understanding HOW the problem / issue can be tackled: This is where life gets very interesting and in my experience where most organisations fail to have any real understanding about how they need to deal with the problems they face

The ‘How’ is where Start Murphy adds real value in a different way to other business consulting practises. Our expertise comes from a proven track record and years of experience at the most senior levels in ensuring problems are both identified and resolved once and for all, allowing our clients to focus on what they do best – Making their organisation a success.

Remember as the song goes:

“It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)” – THAT’S WHAT GET’S RESULTS!!
